Volunteer gives the gift of eyesight
June 30, 2010
Roy Lesher missed the luncheon being held in his honor recently, but he had a good excuse. He was out of the country, Mexico to be exact, to deliver eyeglasses to the less fortunate, HeraldNet.com reports.
Lesher is a member of Lions Club International, and he organized a donation drive for his local chapter. He also helped set up a free vision screening for the local elementary school.
The trip to Mexico was organized by Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity, which had 22 people including Lesher volunteer.
"We worked seven out of the 10 days and saw 2,498 patients," Lesher told the news source. "We were able to help most of them with new glasses, but there were many with cataracts or other conditions which were beyond our capabilities to help."
Lions Club International is often behind fundraising drives and collections for eyeglasses that go to help the less fortunate. Their goal is to provide vision care to those can't afford it.
