UV protection not number one priority
June 30, 2010
A recent study by the American Optometric Association (AOA) revealed that two-thirds of respondents to a survey did not list UV protection as a top priority when buying new sunglasses, Poynter.org reports.
This is troublesome news due to the fact that one of the best, and easiest, ways to protect our eyes from the harmful effects of the sun are with sunglasses.
Our eyes are sensitive to light and can become sunburned if not protected properly. The AOA recommends sunglasses that block out 99 to 100 percent of UV rays. Symptoms of a sunburn to the eyes may include blurred vision, pain, redness or even temporary vision loss.
Prolonged exposure to the sun may lead to the development of cataracts, macular degeneration or even skin cancer of the eyelids, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
Both the AOA and CDC also recommend wearing a wide brimmed hat to protect your vision. Limiting exposure to the sun between peak hours may also help protect eyes.
