Tips on avoiding Computer Vision Syndrome

August 5, 2010

Hours spent on the computer can cause eye strainMany Americans spend hours in front of a computer screen, whether at work or surfing the web at home. While computers can be a very useful tool, too much time spent staring at a screen can cause a condition known as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), according to HealthCareDiet.com.

A recent study conducted in the U.S. revealed that approximately 85 percent of computer users may be at risk of developing CVS, the source reports.

Symptoms of CVS include fatigue, headaches, dry eyes and an inability to maintain focus. The syndrome may also cause pain in other parts of the body, such as neck and shoulder pain. Overhead lighting and glare, or direct air exposure from a vent or fan, can exasperate these symptoms.

Doctors recommend that those who spend long periods of time looking at a computer use proper, focused eyewear rather than contact lenses, which can dry out and irritate the eyes. Additionally, computer users should avoid looking at too many web pages or documents that are bright white.

According to the American Optometric Association, those who wear contact lenses should contact an optometrist immediately if they experience blurred or fuzzy vision, pain in or around their eyes or feel that the lenses are uncomfortable.ADNFCR-2615-ID-19920909-ADNFCR
