Tips for improving vision while driving
December 14, 2010
Good vision is a necessity while driving, whether you're 25 or 65. However, research has found that older drivers are at an increased risk on the road due to vision problems and slower reaction times.
The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends individuals over the age of 60 have an annual eye exam, as an optometrist or ophthalmologist can ensure the eyes don't show any serious age-related changes, according to AllAboutVision.com.
Seniors may also need their eyeglasses prescriptions adjusted more often to maintain optimum vision.
Other tips for staying safe on the road include wearing eyeglasses with anti-reflective coatings to cut down on glare or lenses developed with wavefront diagnostic technology to reduce halos, starbursts, glare and other problems caused by eye aberrations, according to the website.
The AOA also recommends choosing polarized sunglasses to help cut down on glare while driving.
Simple steps such as ensuring glasses are clean before driving can help improve vision as well, according to Independent.ie.
Individuals of all ages are encouraged to speak with an eye professional about the best options for bifocals, mulitfocals or contact lenses for driving.
