Support pours in for legally blind musician
February 23, 2010
The citizens of Chicago, Illinois, recently rallied around a street performer, who is legally blind, after he was robbed of his guitar when he was performing on the B-line platform.
Juan Hernandez was going about his business and packing up his beloved guitar when unidentified individuals stole the instrument, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Since then, many people who have seen Hernandez perform have supported him by donating money. Some local businesses have even donated guitars.
Hernandez has had poor eye health since he was born. As a child he was diagnosed with glaucoma, and throughout his life, his vision has continued to deteriorate.
Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders that progressively damage the optic nerve. Over time the condition may ultimately result in a complete loss of vision, according to the American Optometric Association.
The second leading cause of blindness in America, glaucoma typically affects individuals over the age of 40. Those who are over 40 years of age should have an eye exam once a year so that doctors can identify and treat the condition before it becomes more severe.
