Sunglasses are an important accessory for kids

Sunglasses can help protect children's eye from cumulative sun damageA recent survey conducted by the American Optometric Association (AOA) found that overall parents are not too concerned with the possible damage the sun can do to their children's eye health.

The survey found that while 66 percent of Americans purchase sunglasses for their children, more than 25 percent don't check to make sure the lenses have proper UV protection.

Additionally, less than one third (29 percent) of parents said they make sure their child wears sunglasses while outdoors.

Experts say sunglasses are as important of an accessory as a child's bottle or favorite blanket and that parents shouldn't leave home without them.

"The lenses of children's eyes are more transparent than those of adults allowing shorter wavelength light to reach the retina," said Sarah Hinkley, O.D., the AOA's UV protection expert. "Because the effects of solar radiation are cumulative, it's important to develop good protection habits early, such as purchasing proper sunglasses for young children and teenagers."

Potential eye damage caused by overexposure to the sun may include cataracts, macular degeneration and skin cancer around the eyelids.

The AOA recommends individuals choose sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of UV radiation.
