Uveitis can be dangerous to eye health.Foxnews.com reports that a new surgical technique has restored partial sight to a blind Brooklyn woman.

Casey Rivera, a mother of two who was blinded two years ago after complications from the disease uveitis, recently underwent a surgical procedure on one eye. There was a 50 percent chance that the procedure would be successful.

Alayza, Rivera's 7-year-old daughter, told the news source that she didn't want any presents for Christmas. She just wanted her mom to see again.

The news source reports that Rivera screamed with joy when the bandages were removed and she was able to see.

According to the American Optometric Association, uveitis is a major threat to eye health. The condition causes the middle layer of the eye to swell. Symptoms include a sore, red and inflamed eye.

However, most patients should fully recover if they receive the proper treatment which includes eye drops and anti-inflammatory medications.

In order for your eye care professional to properly monitor eye health, the AOA recommends undergoing vision screenings and eye exams on a regular basis.
