Safety glasses protect women, fight cancer
October 2, 2009
Some female workers find that it is hard to find the correct fit with safety eye-glasses designed for men. However, Eva Eyewear, a new model of safety glasses manufactured by Protective Industrial Products, aims to better protect women workers by providing a slimmer, snugger model than traditional standard-issue safety glasses. Eva offers a sleeker design and pink-rimmed frames that come in a variety of sizes in order to fit any woman's face.
The safety glasses also come in tinted versions for outdoor use and a bifocal version is in the works.
According to the American Optometric Society (AOA), about 2,000 US workers sustain eye injuries at work on a daily basis - of those injuries, approximately 90 percent could have been prevented if the victim had been wearing the correct safety eyeglasses. Under the Healthy People 2010 program, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has been striving to cut workplace eye injuries by almost a third between 2000-2010, the AOA reports.
A portion of the proceeds from Eva will go to the American Cancer Societys Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk - the eyeglasses have generated $5,000 so far, according to the Albany Times Union.
