Research shows that stand-alone vision plans increase eye exams

August 3, 2010

Routine eye exams can help diagnose eye problemsAccording to new research conducted by the National Association of Vision Care Plans (NAVCP), Americans who hold a full service, stand-alone vision insurance plan are twice as likely to receive an eye examination from their optometrist.

The study surveyed approximately 85 million U.S. citizens who took part in vision benefit programs between 2008 and 2009. Consumers who had their vision care bundled with a larger medical plan were less likely to visit a doctor and undergo an eye exam.

"For the first time, the majority of the U.S. vision benefits companies have come together to study the impact their products and services have on the lives of tens of millions of health care consumers," said Liz DiGiandomenic, former president of NAVCP. "We have always known that eye exam is an important component of overall health, but this first-ever study offers additional perspective on the role the vision plan plays in consumer usage patterns."

The research suggests that those who have vision packages separate from their larger medical benefits better understand the importance of regular eye exams.

According to the American Optometric Association, regular eye exams are essential because many eye health issues can only be diagnosed by a professional.
