Pink eye a hazard for many children

August 5, 2010

Pink eye should be treated by an eye doctorConjunctivitis, commonly known as Pink Eye, poses a threat for many people. Children are more susceptible to the disease, with newborns at the highest risk, according to PioneerLocal.com.

Conjunctivitis may be found in two forms - allergic and bacterial. Allergic conjunctivitis can cause itchy, red eyes and excessive tearing. Bacterial pink eye may infect both eyes and can cause a green-hued discharge.

Timely treatment of the affliction can prevent any severe eye treatment. However, if left untreated, the bacterial form of the illness can scar one's eyes and possibly even lead to vision loss.

There are several steps one can take to prevent conjunctivitis. "Never share wash cloths or things like eye shadow and mascara. Contact lens wearers are particularly vulnerable to pink eye which can be caused by poor hygiene with lens, cases or solutions," Dr Loretta De Koster, an eye expert, told the news source.

According to the American Optometric Association, symptoms of pink eye include increased sensitivity to light, excessive tearing or a gritty feeling in both eyes. Those who fear they may be suffering from the affliction should consult a doctor and refrain from using eye drops until otherwise instructed.ADNFCR-2615-ID-19920910-ADNFCR
