Most Americans over 40 need reading glasses

December 4, 2009

The majority of Americans over 40 require glassesSome Americans are startled when they hit 40 and their near-vision begins to deteriorate. However, the American Optometric Association (AOA) suggests that having difficulty reading or doing close work is one of the most common eye health complaints among Americans between the ages of 41 and 60.

In fact, the majority of adults will begin to experience some form of presbyopia (a condition in which the eye looses the ability to focus).

Though the AOA urges everyone to have at least bi-annual eye exams, there are many types of reading glasses available over the counter. (However, if you experience symptoms such as changes in color perception or additional glare, see an eye care professional.)

If you know someone who is always forgetting or losing their pair, one or two pairs of "cheaters" might make a great Christmas present or stocking stuffer. The glasses come in a variety of magnification levels and will work for almost everyone.

For the young people in your life, a hip pair of sunglasses, like aviators or the vintage-style round frames that are popular this year, will make a practical and fun gift.
