Jake Gyllenhaal supports New Eyes for the Needy
December 2, 2009
Most women don't need a reason to look at Jake Gyllenhaal, but here's one: the heartthrob supports New Eyes for the Needy, a non-profit organization that purchases prescription eyeglasses for uninsured or underinsured children and adults in the U.S., and also redistributes discarded or donated eyeglasses to developing nations.
TV.com reported that the actor told In Style magazine that he had poor vision as a child, and his family would donate his out of date prescription glasses to New Eyes. He said, "Thankfully, my eyesight is something that I can take for granted. I want to try and help other people take theirs for granted as well."
The organization also gives out vouchers for Americans to receive free eye exams. According to their website, New Eyes was founded in 1932, and has aided over 7 million people in the U.S. to date.
Even though times are tough, the American Optometric Association urges Americans to see an eye care professional at least once every two years, and recommends that those over 60 receive a thorough eye exam annually.
