How to know when to consider cataract surgery
July 27, 2010
Cataracts are extremely common among the elderly population, affecting over 70 percent of inviduals over the age of 75. There are also lifestyle choices that may affect one's risk of developing the condition as well.
People who have diabetes, smoke, or have a family history of cataracts are also at risk, but American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) has a few tips just in time for Cataract Awareness month, addcomma which begins in August.
The organization recommends routine eye exams annually starting at age 40, as this is the age when early symptoms may begin to accumulate. Quitting smoking and monitoring diabetes are two lifestyle changes that can be made, but people should also remember to protect their eyes with sunglasses when venturing outside.
If you do have cataracts, speak to your eye care specialist about what surgery entails and how long recovery time may be.
"Cataract surgery is a very common procedure, with a success rate of more than 95 percent," Dr Jeffrey Whitman, correspondent with the AAO, said.
Simple measures and routine checkups may help decrease the risk of developing cataracts.
