Globetrotter talks eye care to kids, hands out eyeglasses
January 27, 2010
Touting the importance of proper eye care for children, Harlem Globetrotter Derrick "Dizzy" Grant was in Midvale, Utah, at the America's Best Contacts and Eyeglasses store (which is one of the team's sponsors) to help give free eye exams.
The children were excited to see Grant, who also gave some lucky students tickets to see the Globetrotters perform in Utah in February, according to Utah's ABC affiliate.
Grant was impressed by how enthusiastic the kids were to see him and receive the much needed eye exams. The children who participated in the event were in need of healthcare but could not afford eye exams.
"They're excited," Grant told the news provider. "To see the smiles on their faces, to see the joy on their face, that's what really brings happiness as a Harlem Globetrotter, knowing that I can impact their life."
According to the American Optometric Association, children should typically receive an eye test every two years, unless they complain of blurred vision or other eye problems.
