Former TV star promotes eye health in New YorkEric Estrada is best known for playing the loveable California cop Ponch on the popular TV show CHiPs from 1977 to 1983, but this past week Estrada did his part to help promote the importance of eye health.

According to ETOnline.com, Estrada donned his police uniform and iconic aviator shades in New York City and handed out fake citations to citizens who were not doing all they could do protect their eyes. Violations included such offenses as "visual abandonment" and "indecent exposure"

"I'm thrilled to partner with Transitions Optical to help protect citizens today and tomorrow by educating them about importance of protecting their vision," Estrada told the source.

While Estrada's reprisal of his role offers a whimsical spin on eye health, the repercussions of poor eye care can be extremely serious.

The American Optometric Association (AOA) says that even on cloudy days the sun can be damaging to the eyes and that prolonged exposure to the sun can lead to cataracts and potential damage of the retina. The AOA recommends wearing sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of all UV rays as well as 75 to 90 percent of visible light.ADNFCR-2615-ID-19872435-ADNFCR
