Eye specialist says screen viewing is not damaging to eye health
March 31, 2011
As technology continues to integrate itself into everyday life, some people have been concerned that constantly looking at a computerized screen could have a negative effect on eye health.
However, a specialist in South Dakota is putting an end to the theory, saying that while sitting too close to a television or computer can strain one's eye, it will not affect eyesight, according to the Sioux City Journal.
Dr. Beth Bruening, an ophthalmologist, tells the news provider that although some people may feel a strain in their eyes due to constantly viewing digitalized screens, they may not have to worry about losing their vision later on.
"I think that the more you use your eyes for close things, whether it's playing computer games, texting or using a computer, it's increasing eye strain," she said. "It does not cause permanent damage to your eyes."
Those who are concerned about their eye health should be sure to get regular screenings. According to the American Optometric Association, adults should have their vision screened every two years.
