Encouraging parents to take children's eye health seriously
September 1, 2010
As the new school year approaches, many parents will be taking their children to the doctor for a check-up. However, optometrists urge parents who may not consider an eye exam essential to be more active about protecting their child's vision.
According to Optometry Today, many adults do not consider a visit to the optometrist to be as crucial as a visit to a general practitioner or pharmacist. However, excellent vision is essential for successful learning.
"Poor eyesight can have a significant effect on children's ability to learn and on their behavior, yet often goes unrecognized by teachers, parents and the children themselves," Bob Hughes, chief executive of the Association of Optometrist, told the news source. "The sooner that vision problems are detected the better the outcome."
Eye doctors in the UK are taking steps to increase awareness about the importance of vision screenings and examinations for children. The Optical Confederation's Children's Campaign has begun contacting more than 23,000 school leaders to promote children's eye health.
According to the American Optometric Association, school-aged children should visit their optometrist for a full eye examination at least once very two years, and should undergo regular vision screenings.
