Many cities have acknowledged the need for more eye care facilities, and have begun to open eye health centers.
Duke University's medical center was recently given $12 million to expand their offerings to an eye care facility, according to the Herald Sun. Officials of the medical school are hopeful that their work will help residents of the area receive the best eye care possible, in addition to aiding in national research.
"This state-of-the-art facility will provide the highest quality of eye care to our patients as well as facilitating the translation of discoveries being made on the research side to breakthrough innovations in clinical care for people with various eye diseases and conditions," Victor Dzau, CEO of the Duke University health system, told the news provider.
There is hope that the new building will be completed by 2013, as some eye care professionals are finding that their current residence is too small to serve the number of people who are in need of eye care.
According to the American Optometric Association, people over the age of 40 should receive an eye care exam once a year.
