Computer Vision Syndrome uncomfortable and bad for your vision
December 3, 2009
Last week, the National Post reported that staring at computer screens might be very bad for our eye health.
"By the end of the day, my eyes are so fried," Charlene Simchuk, a financial analyst, told the news source. "They are painful, red itchy, watery - gritty, almost."
Simchuck is not alone. Many office workers suffer from computer vision syndrome (CVS). The condition could cause permanent vision damage, the news source reports.
According to the American Optometric Association, between 50 and 90 percent of workers who are looking at computers all day experience some symptoms of the disorder which can manifest itself as blurred near vision, headaches, neck and back aches and fatigue.
To avoid dry, strained eyes, there are a few tricks that workers can employ. The AOA recommends making sure that your computer is the same brightness of the room around you (not a light source). Try to take frequent breaks and allow your eyes to rest or focus on something in the distance every now and then. Finally, you should see your eye doctor on a regular basis to ensure that your prescription glasses are up to date.
