Book tour aims to raise awareness about importance of vision for learning

January 12, 2011

Undetected vision problems can cause problems with learning and readingLens manufacturer Transitions Optical has announced it will continue its partnership with mobile literacy unit Bess the Book Bus on a nationwide tour this year.

Bess the Book Bus travels throughout the U.S. to distribute books to underprivileged children as well as educates children, parents and teachers about the important connection between healthy vision and reading and learning.

Throughout 2011, Transitions will participate on-site in key events alongside the Book Bus by providing free eyecare and eyewear to children in need.

Eye exams will be conducted in the company's 40-foot, state-of-the-art mobile eyecare clinic named "Eyenstein." In addition to the free exams, Transitions will provide new eyewear fitted with Transitions lenses to children who require prescription eyeglasses, free of charge.

"With one in four children having an undetected vision problem that can interfere with the ability to read and learn, raising awareness among families about the importance of regular, comprehensive eye exams is critical, especially for children," said Transition's Dan McLean.

The Book Bus tour will launch in March in the Tampa Bay area and will continue throughout the country during the summer and fall.

The American Optometric Association recommends school-aged children undergo a comprehensive eye exam at least every two years. If needed, the doctor can prescribe treatment including eyeglasses, contact lenses or vision therapy.
