Be a savvy eyeglasses shopper

November 3, 2009

Know what to look for when purchasing new framesFinding the right frames for your face is important when shopping around for eyeglasses, but before debating between trendy or classic frames, try to have the basics covered.

One of the main things that experts recommend is making sure that your lenses will shield your eyes from the sun. The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends glasses with at least 99 percent UV protection. This doesn't mean that you have to wear dark sunglasses all day – it may be contrary to popular belief, but the darkness of your lenses doesn't actually affect the amount of UV protection they offer, the AOA reports.

Other things to keep in mind while shopping for new specs would be to remember that you have a spare pair with your current prescription on hand, especially if you have difficulty driving or traveling without your glasses. Keep your eye peeled for two-for-one deals and sales to get the second pair at a reasonable price.

Every pair of glasses have certain information written somewhere on the frame which identifies the manufacturer or designer, the frame name or number, the frame size, and the frame color. Use this information to comparison shop to get the best deal on the exact style you want.
