Are stiletto shoes a danger to eye health?
February 12, 2010
Many factory workers wouldn't think about heading off to work without their safety eyeglasses, but should city dwellers consider donning a pair before ducking into a cab?
Well, if they're in the middle of a fight with their girlfriend that may be prudent.
Earlier this week, a British man, 28-year-old Gavin Taylor, was stabbed in the eye by a one of his girlfriend's stiletto heels during a taxi ride. The two appeared to be having a fight when the incident occurred, according to the Mirror.
The news source reports that the shoe pierced the victim's eye and entered his brain, and might have caused permanent damage. Taylor was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is currently in stable but critical condition.
Though one never knows when an accident will occur, those who work with machinery or dangerous chemicals should guard against potential eye health problems by wearing eye safety glasses.
According to the American Optometric Association, health care workers, laboratory and janitorial staff, and other workers may be at risk of acquiring infectious diseases from eye exposure and should wear protective eyeglasses.
