Are monocles making a comeback?
December 14, 2009
A topic of debate among fashion bloggers and eyeglasses retailers this week centers on the resurgence of the monocle, an accessory poised for an unexpected comeback.
NPR.org reports that British eyeglasses stores have experienced a slew of requests to begin stocking the monocle, much to the surprise of the retail industry.
In London, young hipsters are reveling in the retro look of one lens, which originally became popular way back in the 1790's. Even if the fashionable young Brits have begun to covet the old-school corrective lenses, is it likely that the trend will soon find its way overseas?
Because eyeglasses are likely to be more comfortable and less attention grabbing, it is likely that monocles will remain in the niche market and that eye care patients will continue to wear traditional glasses.
Whether you prefer one lens or two, the American Optometric Association recommends that young adults visit an eye care professional at least once every two years to ensure that your prescription has not changed and that your eyes are functioning normally.
