3D games may help uncover vision issues in kids

3D games may help uncover vision issues in kidsDespite the fact that Nintendo has advised children 6-years-old or younger not to use their new 3D gaming system, the Nintendo 3DS, some eye experts are claiming that the technology could help identify eye health issues sooner, according to The Associated Press.

"The 3DS could be a godsend for identifying kids under 6 who need vision therapy," Dr. Michale Duenas, associate director for health sciences and policy for the American Optometric Association (AOA), told the news source.

The gaming system allows youngsters to view 3D images without the use of glasses. According to Duenas, kids who are unable to see these screen shots may suffer from amblyopia, otherwise known as lazy eye. Additionally, the inability to see the 3D images could indicate a more subtle vision problem that could lead to larger issues, such as difficulty reading, later on down the road.

One eye doctor said that the gaming system was "a wonderful opportunity" for vision health experts and parents alike.

According to the AOA, parents should not rely on simple vision screenings for school-aged kids, but should also take them to an eye doctor for a full exam.
